TADs (Temporary Anchorage Devices)

Temporary Anchorage Devices, or TADs, are small titanium anchors used in select orthodontic treatments to provide precise, efficient tooth movement. They can be used alongside braces or sometimes in place of traditional options like headgear.

Before placing a TAD, we thoroughly numb the gum and surrounding area with a strong local anesthetic. Once you’re comfortable, the TAD is gently positioned through the gum and into the jawbone. The process is quick—often finished within seconds.
You may feel light pressure during placement, but most patients report that the sensation fades within a day. TADs are removed once they’ve served their purpose in your treatment, and removal is a simple, comfortable procedure that takes only a few minutes.

Placement of TADs

Caring for a TAD is similar to caring for braces—brush thoroughly at least three times a day. We’ll also provide an antimicrobial mouthwash to use twice daily to keep the area clean and healthy.

If you have any questions about TADs or how they fit into your treatment plan, our team is here to help and provide any additional details you may need.

What if I feel discomfort after getting a TAD?

Mild tenderness can occur, and Tylenol® is typically recommended for relief. If discomfort persists for more than a couple of days, please reach out to our office so we can make sure everything is healing properly.
